Located on Berry Street in Liverpool’s vibrant Ropewalks district, the Black Horse & Rainbow is a throwback to a time when pubs thrived, reclaiming the name it once wore on Berry Street. Following an extensive refurbishment, the venue has been transformed into a welcoming neighbourhood destination that celebrates the character and heritage of the traditional public house, while offering an impressive food and drink offering, live entertainment and a spacious beer garden.
We worked closely with the team at DGB Hospitality, supplying a combination of new furniture and reclaimed pieces throughout the project. The scheme was designed to support the vision of creating a genuine, character-filled boozer, with a considered mix of traditional materials, bespoke seating and salvaged pieces.
A focal point of the interior is our bespoke Glasgow bench seating, manufactured to fit the space precisely. Each bench was made to measure and upholstered in rich leather, with traditional deep-buttoned backs providing both comfort and a strong visual connection to the classic pub aesthetic. The pieces were finished in a Jacobean Oak stain, creating warmth and consistency across the venue.
The bench seating is complemented by furniture from across our traditional classics furniture collection, including matching Haughton low and high stools, alongside Broadway low stools paired with Angel, Parisian and Industrial cast iron bases. These are combined with a mix of new solid oak and reclaimed copper tabletops, introducing variation in texture and finish while retaining the traditional character of the scheme.
Within the bar area, Tulip Refectory poseur bases were also supplied, finished with solid oak tops. Together, the different seating and table configurations create a varied and flexible layout, while maintaining a cohesive visual language throughout the interior.
To complete the scheme, a carefully selected collection of antique and reclaimed pub furniture and accessories was sourced from our warehouse. Traditional honours boards, reclaimed wall racks, classic standard lamps and solid oak planters add further layers of history and individuality to the space. These details reinforce the authentic character of the interior, helping the venue to feel as though it has evolved naturally over many years rather than being newly created.
The Black Horse & Rainbow brings together many of the enduring qualities of the traditional British pub: warm timber, classic cast iron, comfortable leather seating and carefully considered details. The result is a characterful and welcoming interior that combines a strong sense of heritage with the requirements of a contemporary neighbourhood venue.
