I would suggest that this chest of drawers has never had anything done to it since the date of manufacture way back in 1760. So in the trade we would say ‘it’s in original untouched condition‘. Having all the original swan neck brass handles, most of the original bracket feet, it has a good original colour and all the keyhole escutcheons are original.
What needs doing... The drawers linings and draw runners all need resetting and repairing. Quite a lot of cock beading and side mouldings are missing. The foot and some of the moulding on the back right hand side is missing. It all needs washing off and waxing up.
Why did you buy this chest Martin I hear you say? Well the reason is when all this work is done and one has invested the time and money, it will be a very good example of an 18th Century Chippendale period mahogany chest of drawers. And it is of a size that can be used on the ground floor, in a hall way, drawing room or in a bedroom.
If you would like to take on the challenge yourself the chest can be purchased in its present condition for £345 plus VAT, or get in touch and we can give you a price to do the work in our workshop in Stafford.
